BBC World Services listeners have been hearing that BT has a happier, healthier
and more efficient workforce - thanks to its policy on flexible
working.
In an eight-minute interview on the Business Daily programme, BT
director of people and policy Caroline Waters said the benefits of its approach
were “absolutely amazing”.
She revealed that BT’s 12,000 homeworkers are
20 per cent more productive than their colleagues and took an average of three
days sick a year, compared with the national average of eight. The company has
also saved £500 million in real estate costs in the past six years, she
said.
The advent of broadband meant most aspects of any job – from chief
executive to personal assistant – could be done from home, said Caroline. This
includes virtual meetings, planning and scheduling.
Although ten per cent
of the workforce are based exclusively at home, Caroline said many other BT
employees – including herself – opt for occasional homeworking.
“It’s all
about me having the freedom to choose the right place to work in the way that’s
most efficient to me at the time,” she said.
